Methods of contextualising: Week 1

For the project we chose to focus on the data of the Supply Chain and Procurement (Scope 3). We wanted to focus on the data that we used in our day to day life as a students. So we chose to focus on the printing supply chain, more specific the digital print workshop.

Looking at the data pack provided its important to note they can’t/don’t provide the following:

• Emission factor per kg of paper

• Emission factor per ml of ink

• Emission per print

• Print room electricity breakdown

• Material-specific carbon data

UAL calculates procurement emissions using a spend-based approach.

They calculate based on:

£ spent Å~ average emissions factor for that category.

That is a macro-scale accounting method that does not give you object-level carbon.

So we decided to each research 2 printers from the digital print workshop and calculate the carbon emission of 1 A2 print on each printer. We looked into: paper production, ink consumption, ink manufacturing, printer manufacturing, electricity consumption

Visual development of the data: The idea with these visualisations was to show the data to compare it with every day uses of other thing to put them in a different scale.

SCALE:

How can a single artefact visualise its participation in global consumption networks?

AGENCY:

Does making carbon visible redistribute responsibility between student and institution?

ETHICAL:

Does disclosure change behaviour, or merely stylize the impact?
