Methods of investigating: Week 2

This week, I focused more on the site with a more zoomed-out focus to investigate further. For my research, I am focusing more on the site itself rather than the people around it, because most people walk, cycle, run, etc. past the site without really paying attention to its surroundings.

  • I continued scanning the environment with my scanner, but many scans failed. I wanted to focus on things in the environment that you quickly miss when you walk past them or things you miss because you are used to the environment.
  • Based on the scans, I started looking at the different types of surfaces that provide texture to the environment.
  • Many people pass by the site without paying much attention to it. However, there were a few who, like me, were enjoying the surroundings.
  • There are many human elements to be found in the nature of the environment, including many abandoned things or elements in a state of disrepair. It makes me think about how we value material things when we neglect or abandon them, as opposed to when we take care of the same elements in a different context.
  • Within the environment, there are many human elements that are very geometric, in contrast to nature, which is very organic. These two types of forms create an interesting contrast with each other.
  • There are many boats in the canal where people live. It makes me think about how these people live on and around the water. What their lives are like. It was also striking that many different things are stored on their boats, which sometimes raises questions about the culture associated with people who live on boats.
